Define Your Target Audience

There’s an old adage in marketing: target everyone and you target no one.

If you want to successfully market your website, product or service, you must put the basic building blocks in place before you start building your empire.

First, let’s define “target audience.”  A target audience is a distinctive segment of potential customers who would be most interested in your offer.  If you are selling matchbox cars, you wouldn’t target senior citizens!

It’s helpful to ask yourself a series of questions about your target audience and document the answers.  You may find that you have two or more distinct audiences and that’s fine.  For example, if you have a “healthy lifestyle” website, one target audience may be younger women interested in a healthy skincare routine and another may be parents with children interested in good family nutrition.  Handling multiple target audiences can be successful and profitable, but you first need to identify them so that you can meet their needs.

Here are some key identifying factors for each target audience:

Age range

Gender

Geographic location

Occupation

Education level

Ways they spend discretionary income

Hobbies and activities

Income level

Marital status

Do they have children, what age range

Do they live in the city, suburbs, country

Conservative or liberal

Other beliefs or special interests

Make Your Ad Copy a Click Magnet

Many web entrepreneurs find the task of writing ad copy daunting.  But follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to writing “click magnet” ad copy:

Focus on Benefits: When writing ad copy for the web, or any medium for that matter, the focus has to be on consumer benefits.  In just a handful of words, you must convey why your product, service or website will enhance the life of your reader. For example, if your copy promotes weight loss: LOSE WEIGHT FAST definitely conveys customer benefits in just a few words.  Those three little words project two major benefits: 1. Weight loss.  2.  Weight loss in a short period of time.

Avoid Passive Voice. Make your copy punchy with active verbs. Which example is more powerful: I love you or You are loved by me?  Exactly!  Stick with dynamic active verbs.

Select Power Words. Miracle. Powerful. Profitable.  Revealing.  Revolutionary. Life Changing.  Exclusive. Superior. Captivate your reader with attention grabbing benefit words.

Use Plain English. Nothing fancy here.  Good old-fashioned English does the trick.  People are turned off by industry jargon or words that make them reach for their dictionary.

Take the Short Road. Avoid the mortal sin of long, rambling copy.  When a web surfer sees an endless block of copy, they tend to run to the next website.  You can still state your case; just use short paragraphs and visual aids, such as bullets instead of a never-ending paragraph.

Use Twitter to Grow Your Site

Twitter can attract new traffic to your website and keep people coming back.  But, like any marketing technique, it depends on how you use it.  Here are some tips that may help you as you grow your website following:

  • Establish Your Goals.  Do you want to establish yourself as an expert in your industry?  Are you selling a product or service that you want to highlight? Do you want to help your customers promote their business or product? Understanding what you want Twitter to do for you will help you maintain your focus and stay on task.
  • Avoid Tweet Overload. People will quickly tire of your tweets if you constantly send out messages of little or no value to them.  Be sure that your tweets say something that your followers enjoy and/or use.  Excessive tweets can be overwhelming and obnoxious.
  • Avoid Obvious Self Promotion. Don’t use Twitter to overtly promote your business.  Nothing is more boring than reading about how XYZ Company made a $zillion last month. Always keep your followers in mind.  You can advertise your success but only in relation to “what’s in it” for your followers.
  • Steer Clear of Personal Opinions.  Stick to the reason you are on Twitter in the first place.  For example, don’t respond with your personal opinion about a current news story.  If you are making a comment on news, be sure it makes sense, in terms of your site’s content and only include information that your followers would find interesting.
  • Ask Questions.  This is an excellent way to get Twitter feedback, create interest and bond with your followers.
